What matters most to you? How do you align your estate plan with your personal values, family goals, business interests and charitable legacies? Our speaker will lead us in a discussion of these issues by reference to the Wills of Gertrude Stein, Brooke Astor and Huguette Clark. We will learn how the life estate that Gertrude left to Alice B. Toklas turned out. Brooke and Huguette were both extremely private women in life. However, the ends of their lives were marked by public speculation that those with whom they placed their trust had abused it. When their Wills were offered for probate, challenges that they were unduly influenced or mislead were raised by concerned family members. How did this happen? Could it have been prevented? Their Wills are now public documents for the world to view and scrutinize. Michael McCarthy, a trusts and estates attorney with experience in planning substantial estates and in defending Will contests, will lead us in a discussion of the lessons that can be learned from these famous women.
